Abstract
Authors report four cases of bone defects of the tibia as a complication of acute pyogenic osteomyelitis which were treated by transfering the autogenic fibular shaft.
The tibia defect due to acute pyogenic osteomyelitis can be created when the developement of the involucrum is incomplete or the sequestrum is removed too soon. Spontaneous regeneration of tibial defects is almost impossible for children over 8 years old and persistant defects in the tibia can develop instability of the affected leg. Reconstructive surgery shouldbe performed as soon as possible after the sinus is closed.
Hypertrophy of the transfered fibula will consistently occur in children in proportion to the number of years left for bone growth.
